An isthmus (pronounced /ˈɪsθməs/ or /ˈɪsməs/; plural: isthmuses, isthmi, from Ancient Greek: ἰσθμός isthmos "neck") is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas usually with waterforms on either side.1 Of note, the Isthmus of Corinth connects the peninsula of Peloponnese with the rest of the Greek peninsula, the Isthmus of Panama connects the continents of North and South America (the Americas), and the Isthmus of Suez in Egypt connects Africa and Asia (or Eurasia).
Canals are often built on isthmuses where they may be particularly advantageous to create a shortcut for marine transportation. The Panama Canal bisects the Isthmus of Panama, thereby connecting the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; the Suez Canal adjoins the North Atlantic and Indian Oceans, cutting across the Isthmus of Suez to connect the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Suez/Red Sea. Strait is the sea counterpart of isthmus.
In medical terms, isthmus is used to describe the congenital fusion between two organs or two halves of an organ. Examples are the connection between the lower part of the two thyroid lobes or the connection between the two lower poles of the left and right kidney in a horseshoe kidney.

You know what, it's exactly like it sounds on the Shipping Forecast What's going for it? "Never heard of it," said the petrol station attendant. Really? Really ? He had a wicked gleam in his eye. I'm sure it must get annoying to be reminded of the Shipping Forecast by every bleeder up here on holiday. But that's Cromarty's fault for sounding – and being – so blinking romantic. Madison has developed little problem with people rioting on Halloween The general consensus is that its out of towners who cause the problems so one of the proposals is to close the isthmus While I think it s a silly idea to prevent rioting I always like it when a snow storm or conference of mayors shuts down the isthmus It keeps all of the outsiders away and lets
